Stubbornness gets a terrible reputation in Scripture, and honestly, it deserves it. We’re not talking about having strong convictions or standing firm on biblical principles. That’s faithfulness. Stubbornness is something different entirely.
It’s digging your heels in against God’s direction, refusing to listen to wisdom, and insisting on your own way even when the evidence screams that you’re wrong. The Bible uses some pretty harsh imagery for it: stiff-necked, hard-hearted, rebellious.
God compares stubborn people to mules that have to be controlled with bits and bridles because they won’t respond to gentle guidance. Think about Pharaoh, who hardened his heart repeatedly despite witnessing miracle after miracle.
Or the Israelites in the wilderness, who saw God provide for them daily yet constantly complained and rebelled. Stubbornness isn’t just annoying; it’s dangerous.
It cuts you off from God’s blessing, leads you into unnecessary suffering, and can eventually result in judgment. What makes it particularly destructive is that stubborn people rarely see themselves as stubborn.

But there comes a point where stubbornness hardens into something permanent, and judgment becomes inevitable.
Stubbornness isn’t just about being strong-willed. It’s fundamentally about pride. It’s believing you know better than God, better than wise counsel, better than the clear evidence in front of you. It’s the fool who sees themselves as wise and therefore can’t be taught.
The person who refuses correction despises themselves, Scripture says, because they’re guaranteeing their own downfall.
Every rebuke ignored, every warning dismissed, every conviction resisted makes your heart a little harder until eventually you can’t feel God’s conviction anymore.
But here’s the hope: God calls us to circumcise our hearts, to soften what’s become hard, to turn from our stubborn ways. It’s never too late to repent until it is.
The solution to stubbornness is humility, the willingness to admit you were wrong, to receive correction, to change direction when God says turn. That takes courage, but it’s the only path to life.
Say This Prayer for Stubbornness In the Bible
Father, I confess I’ve been stubborn and resistant to Your correction. I’ve insisted on my own way when You were calling me in a different direction.
Forgive me for the times I’ve hardened my heart against Your voice, ignored wise counsel, and refused to change even when I knew I should.
Soften my heart. Make me teachable, humble, and responsive to Your Spirit. Help me recognize stubbornness in myself before it leads me into destruction.
Give me the courage to admit when I’m wrong and the wisdom to turn around quickly when You redirect me.
