We live in a culture that celebrates self-promotion. Get yours. Look out for number one. Put yourself first. It’s everywhere, from social media feeds to self-help books. And honestly? It feels natural.
Our instincts scream at us to protect our interests, guard our time, and prioritize our needs. But Jesus flipped that script completely. He didn’t just teach servant leadership as a nice idea; He lived it. He washed feet. He healed the sick.
He fed the hungry. And ultimately, He laid down His life. That’s the kind of radical, upside-down love the Bible calls us to. Putting others first doesn’t mean becoming a doormat or ignoring your own legitimate needs.
It’s not about enabling unhealthy behavior or losing your identity in people-pleasing. It’s about choosing humility over pride, service over selfishness, and love over convenience. It’s about seeing people the way God sees them and valuing their needs as highly as your own.
This isn’t easy. It goes against every self-preservation instinct we have. But it’s the heart of what it means to follow Christ. When we put others first, we’re reflecting the character of God Himself, who gave everything for us when we deserved nothing.

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. Look after him, he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have. Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? The expert in the law replied, The one who had mercy on him. Jesus told him, Go and do likewise.

Our Thoughts on What The Bible Says About Putting Others First
The Bible presents a countercultural vision of greatness: true leadership looks like service, and real strength is found in humility. From cover to cover, Scripture challenges our natural tendency toward self-centeredness and calls us to something far more beautiful.
Jesus is our ultimate example. He had every right to demand service, yet He chose to serve. He could have lorded His authority over people, but instead He washed dirty feet and touched untouchable lepers.
His entire life was an act of putting others first, culminating in the cross where He gave everything for our sake. This isn’t optional for followers of Christ. It’s central to what it means to love like God loves.
When we put others first, we’re not being weak or foolish; we’re reflecting the very character of God. We’re choosing the kind of sacrificial love that builds up communities, strengthens relationships, and transforms lives.
The beauty is this: when we lose our lives in service to others, we actually find them. When we give, we receive. When we humble ourselves, God lifts us up. The way up in God’s kingdom is always down.
Say This Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to love the way You love. Give me eyes to see the needs around me and a heart willing to meet them. Help me lay down my pride, my agenda, and my desire for recognition so I can truly serve others.
When my natural selfishness rises up, remind me of Your example. You left heaven’s glory to serve humanity. You washed feet. You gave Your life. Help me follow in Your footsteps, even when it’s inconvenient or costly.
Fill me with genuine compassion for the people You’ve placed in my life. Show me practical ways to put their interests above my own.
Give me the strength and grace to serve cheerfully, not reluctantly. Let my life be marked by the kind of sacrificial love that points people to You. In Your name, Amen.
