35 Bible Verses About Seeking Wise Counsel

We live in an age where everyone’s an expert, and advice is free and abundant. Social media has turned every person with an internet connection into a life coach, financial advisor, relationship guru, and spiritual mentor.

You can get advice on literally anything within seconds, but here’s the problem: most of it is garbage. Bad counsel wrapped in confident language can sound incredibly convincing, especially when it tells you what you want to hear.

The Bible has a radically different perspective on seeking advice. Scripture doesn’t just encourage us to get counsel; it warns us repeatedly that the quality of the advice we accept will directly shape the trajectory of our lives.

Proverbs tells us that plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. That’s not just ancient wisdom. It’s a timeless principle that could save you from catastrophic mistakes in your marriage, career, finances, parenting, and spiritual life.

But here’s where it gets tricky: not all counsel is created equal. Who you listen to matters more than you realize. Are they speaking from biblical wisdom or cultural trends? Do they have the fruit in their own lives to back up what they’re teaching?

Are they pointing you toward God’s will or just validating your preferences? The wise person doesn’t just seek advice; they’re intentional about seeking wise counsel from people who fear God, know Scripture, and have walked the road before them.

Our Thoughts on What The Bible Says About Seeking Wise Counsel

Scripture is abundantly clear: seeking wise counsel isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a mark of wisdom. The person who refuses advice, who insists they’ve got everything figured out on their own, is setting themselves up for disaster.

Proverbs repeatedly hammers home the point that plans succeed with many advisers and fail without them. That’s not just nice-sounding poetry. It’s a practical principle that could save your business, your marriage, your family, and your future.

But the Bible also warns us to be incredibly selective about who we allow to speak into our lives. Rehoboam’s story is a cautionary tale: he rejected wise counsel from experienced elders and instead listened to his immature friends who told him what he wanted to hear.

That decision split his kingdom in half. The quality of your counselors matters as much as having counselors at all. Are they walking with God? Do they know Scripture? Do they have wisdom born from experience and spiritual maturity?

Here’s what I find convicting: pride is often the biggest barrier to receiving good counsel. We don’t want to admit we need help. We don’t want someone pointing out our blind spots.

But the wise person doesn’t just tolerate correction; they actively seek it out. They surround themselves with people who will tell them the truth, even when it hurts.

God gives wisdom generously to those who ask, but He often delivers it through the counsel of wise, godly people. Don’t be too proud to receive it.

Say This Prayer

Father, I confess that I’ve often made decisions based on my own limited understanding rather than seeking wise counsel. My pride has kept me from admitting when I need help, and I’ve suffered consequences because of it.

Give me the humility to recognize that I don’t have all the answers and the wisdom to know who I should listen to. Surround me with godly counselors who will speak truth to me, even when it’s difficult to hear.

Help me to discern between advice that flatters my ego and counsel that actually points me toward Your will. Teach me to be teachable, to receive correction with grace, and to value wisdom above protecting my pride.

Lead me to mentors and advisers who fear You and know Your Word. And when You speak through them, give me the courage to listen and obey. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
