The phrase “it is well with my soul” carries a weight that only makes sense when you know the story behind it. Horatio Spafford wrote those words after losing his four daughters in a shipwreck.
While sailing over the spot where they drowned, he penned one of the most powerful hymns in Christian history. That’s the paradox of biblical peace. It’s not about everything being okay in your circumstances.
It’s about your soul being anchored to something deeper than what’s happening around you. When the Bible talks about things being well, it’s rarely referring to easy circumstances or comfortable situations.
This concept runs throughout Scripture. Job declared God’s goodness while sitting in ashes, covered in sores, having lost everything. Paul and Silas sang hymns in prison at midnight, their backs bloody from being beaten.
Jesus said “it is finished” while dying on a cross. That’s the kind of “well” the Bible offers. It’s a settled confidence that God is in control, that His purposes will prevail, that nothing can separate us from His love.
It’s saying “it is well” when logic screams otherwise, when feelings argue the opposite, when circumstances suggest you’re delusional. This isn’t toxic positivity or denial.
It’s a supernatural peace that transcends understanding, the kind that can only come from knowing who holds your future regardless of what today looks like.

Our Summary on What The Bible Says About It Is Well
Saying “it is well” isn’t about pretending everything’s fine when it’s not. It’s a declaration of faith that sits above your circumstances, not in denial of them.
The Bible is full of people who faced absolute disasters yet maintained that their souls were anchored in God. They didn’t minimize their pain or fake happiness.
They acknowledged the hardship while simultaneously affirming God’s goodness and sovereignty. That’s the biblical tension we’re called to live in.
This kind of peace doesn’t come naturally. It’s supernatural. Paul calls it a peace that transcends understanding, which means it doesn’t make logical sense given what you’re facing.
It’s the kind of peace that can only come from knowing God is in control even when everything feels out of control. It’s trusting that He works all things together for good, even when you can’t see how.
It’s believing His grace is sufficient, even when you desperately want Him to change your situation instead. The promise isn’t that life will be easy or pain-free. Jesus explicitly said we’d have trouble in this world.
But He also said He’s overcome the world, which means nothing you face is stronger than what He’s already conquered.
When you can say “it is well with my soul” in the middle of the storm, you’re demonstrating a faith that’s been tested and proven genuine. That’s the kind of peace the world can’t give and can’t take away.
Say This Prayer for It Is Well
Father, I want to be able to say “it is well” even when nothing around me feels well. Give me that supernatural peace that doesn’t depend on my circumstances being perfect.
Help me trust You when I can’t see the way forward, when the pain is overwhelming, when nothing makes sense. Anchor my soul to Your unchanging character rather than my changing feelings.
Remind me that You’re working all things for my good, even when I can’t see it yet. Strengthen my faith to believe Your promises when everything around me suggests otherwise. Let Your peace guard my heart and mind.
Help me rest in Your sovereignty, knowing You hold my future securely. When storms come, may my first response be to declare Your faithfulness. It is well because You are God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
