This is honestly one of the trickier topics to tackle from Scripture because, let’s be real, many of us have felt that tug. You scroll through social media and see more outrage over a mistreated dog than a neglected child.
You know someone who pours thousands into their pets but won’t help a struggling neighbor. Maybe you’ve even caught yourself thinking animals are easier to love than people because they don’t judge, betray, or complicate your life the way humans do.
The Bible has a lot to say about caring for animals, and God clearly values His creation. We see His compassion for creatures throughout Scripture, from saving animals on the ark to caring about a sparrow that falls.
But here’s where it gets uncomfortable: the Bible also establishes a clear hierarchy of value, with humans created uniquely in God’s image. When our affection for animals surpasses our love and concern for people, something’s out of balance with God’s design.
I want to be careful here because loving animals isn’t the problem. God calls us to be good stewards of creation, and caring for animals reflects His heart.
The issue arises when that love becomes disordered, when we’d rather rescue every stray but ignore the homeless person on the corner. Scripture challenges us to examine our hearts and ask some honest questions about where our compassion flows most freely.
Let’s look at what God’s Word says about this tension between loving animals and loving people well.

Our Summary on What The Bible Says About Loving Animals More Than Humans
Scripture establishes that while God cares deeply for all His creation, humans hold a unique place as image bearers. We’re not just slightly more important than animals; we’re fundamentally different, created for relationship with God and eternity with Him.
The righteous person cares for their animals, yes, but this care exists within a framework where human welfare takes priority. God’s heart beats loudest for people, and ours should too.
What I find convicting is how many verses call us to active love for people, especially the vulnerable and marginalized. It’s easy to love animals because they don’t challenge us, confront our selfishness, or require the messy work of forgiveness and reconciliation.
But God repeatedly commands us to love our neighbor, care for the poor, show hospitality to strangers, and prioritize people in need. When we’re more moved by animal suffering than human suffering, we’ve twisted our affections away from God’s priorities.
Here’s the balanced truth: care for animals as good stewards, but never let that care eclipse your love for people. If you’d drop everything for a sick pet but wouldn’t help a struggling friend, that’s a heart issue worth examining.
God designed us to be caretakers of creation and lovers of people. Both matter, but they’re not equal. The image of God stares back at you from human faces, not animal faces. Let that reality shape where you invest your compassion, time, and resources most generously.
Say This Prayer for Loving Animals More Than Humans
Father, search my heart and reveal any misplaced affections. Thank You for the gift of animals and the joy they bring, but help me never to elevate them above the people You created in Your image.
Forgive me for the times I’ve shown more compassion to animals than to the hurting people around me. Give me Your heart for people, especially those who are difficult to love or easy to overlook.
Help me see every person as an image bearer, valuable and precious to You. Teach me to be a good steward of creation while prioritizing the welfare of my neighbors.
Break any coldness in my heart toward people and kindle a genuine love that reflects Your own. Order my affections according to Your will and help me invest my compassion where You want it to flow. In Jesus’ name, Amen
