Most people think they have a pretty good handle on stealing. Don’t take what isn’t yours. Simple enough, right? But when you dig into what the Bible actually says about theft, you realize it goes way deeper than just shoplifting or breaking into someone’s house.
God cares about all the subtle ways we take what doesn’t belong to us, from cheating on taxes to fudging time cards to keeping the extra change when a cashier makes a mistake.
Stealing made it into the Ten Commandments for a reason. It’s not just about property loss. It’s about broken trust, violated relationships, and a heart that believes it needs to grab what it wants rather than trusting God to provide.
When you steal, you’re essentially saying that God either can’t or won’t meet your needs, so you have to take matters into your own hands.
What’s challenging is that our culture has normalized so many forms of theft that we barely recognize them anymore. Pirating music and movies, padding expense reports, taking office supplies home, using someone else’s streaming account password.
The Bible doesn’t give us loopholes or gray areas here. God calls His people to absolute honesty in all our dealings because our integrity reflects His character. God also offers a path toward honest living and genuine transformation for those who’ve struggled with it.

Our Summary on What The Bible Says About Stealing
The Bible’s teaching on stealing is uncompromising and comprehensive. It’s not just one of the Ten Commandments; it’s reinforced throughout scripture with warnings, consequences, and practical applications.
God doesn’t give us categories of acceptable theft or situations where it’s okay to take what isn’t ours. The command is simple and absolute: don’t steal.
What’s particularly powerful is how scripture connects stealing to heart issues. Jesus said theft comes from within, from the human heart.
It’s not just about the act itself but about what drives it: greed, envy, lack of trust in God’s provision, or laziness that doesn’t want to work honestly for what we need. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes honest work as the alternative to stealing.
Rather than taking what belongs to others, we’re called to work with our own hands and even have something to share with those in need. The passages about restitution show that God takes theft seriously enough to require not just returning what was stolen but paying significantly more as a penalty.
Zacchaeus understood this when he promised to repay fourfold anyone he’d cheated. True repentance from theft involves making things right, not just feeling sorry.
And the verses about employers withholding wages remind us that stealing isn’t just an individual sin. Those in power can steal from workers, and God hears the cries of those who’ve been defrauded.
Say This Prayer About Stealing
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I’ve taken what wasn’t mine, whether through obvious theft or the subtle ways I’ve been dishonest.
Search my heart and reveal any area where I’m still compromising my integrity. Give me the courage to make restitution where I need to, even when it’s costly or embarrassing.
Lord, help me trust you to provide for my needs so I’m never tempted to steal out of fear or desperation. Teach me the value of honest work and give me a heart that wants to share what I have rather than taking from others.
When I see opportunities to be dishonest and think no one will notice, remind me that you see everything and my character matters more than any temporary gain. Make me someone whose integrity is beyond question. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
