35 Bible Verses That Explain Forgive but Never Forget

Here’s where things get tricky with popular Christian sayings: “forgive but never forget” sounds spiritual, but it’s not actually what the Bible teaches. In fact, Scripture pushes us toward something far more radical and honestly more difficult.

God doesn’t just forgive and remember; He forgives and chooses not to count our sins against us anymore. That’s a completely different paradigm. Now, does biblical forgiveness mean you develop amnesia about what happened? Of course not.

You can’t unsee betrayal or undo hurt. The memories remain. But here’s the distinction that matters: remembering the facts of what happened is different from holding those facts against someone in ongoing punishment or bitterness.

One is just honest memory; the other is unforgiveness dressed up in self protection. What Scripture actually teaches is this tension between wisdom and grace. Yes, you forgive freely and completely, releasing the debt and the desire for revenge.

But that doesn’t mean you ignore patterns, dismiss red flags, or put yourself back in harm’s way foolishly. Forgiveness isn’t stupidity.

You can forgive someone fully while also setting boundaries, requiring accountability, or recognizing that trust needs to be rebuilt over time. These verses will show you how God balances mercy with wisdom, and how He calls us to do the same.

Our Thoughts on What The Bible Says About Forgive but Never Forget

The Bible doesn’t support the “forgive but never forget” mentality if what we mean by that is holding grudges with a spiritual veneer. God’s model is actually more challenging: He forgives AND chooses not to remember our sins against us.

That’s not divine amnesia; it’s a deliberate choice not to bring up our past failures once they’re covered by His grace. He calls us to the same standard.

But here’s the nuance we can’t ignore: forgiving someone doesn’t require you to be naive about their character or patterns. When Scripture talks about wisdom, discernment, and not casting pearls before swine, it’s acknowledging that some people aren’t safe.

You can completely forgive your alcoholic parent while also setting boundaries about them being alone with your kids. You can forgive the business partner who stole from you without going into business with them again.

Forgiveness releases them from your judgment; wisdom protects you from unnecessary harm. The key is your heart posture. Are you replaying their sins to fuel bitterness, or are you simply being prudent based on demonstrated patterns?

One keeps you in prison; the other keeps you safe. Forgiveness means you stop demanding payment for the debt. It doesn’t mean pretending the debt never existed or that trust doesn’t need rebuilding.

Say This Prayer for Forgive but Never Forget

Father, forgiveness is hard, especially when the wounds are deep and the memories are vivid. Help me release the people who’ve hurt me from my personal courtroom. Take away my desire for revenge and my need to keep score.

Teach me to forgive the way You forgive: completely, freely, without conditions. But Lord, also give me wisdom. Help me discern the difference between forgiveness and foolishness, between mercy and enabling destructive patterns.

Show me how to set healthy boundaries while keeping a soft heart. Protect me from bitterness disguised as discernment, and from naivety disguised as grace.

Let me remember what happened without letting those memories control me. Help me learn from the past without living in it. Give me the courage to trust again when it’s appropriate, and the wisdom to recognize when it’s not. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
